Where We Come From

We create handcrafted, heirloom-quality furniture that blends timeless craftsmanship with modern design. Every piece starts with carefully selected solid hardwood chosen for grain pattern, color, and character. We use joinery techniques that have proven themselves over centuries: mortise and tenon, hand-cut joints that create strength without relying on hardware or shortcuts.

Our workshop in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina is where Dan brings together Louisiana heritage and master woodworking skills. Each piece gets built by hand, one at a time, with attention to details that mass production can't replicate. We sand by hand to feel the wood's texture. We apply finishes in multiple coats, waiting between applications for proper curing. We select each board individually, looking for grain patterns that complement each other.

This process takes longer than factory production. A custom dining table might spend six to eight weeks in our workshop. But that time investment creates furniture that improves with age instead of falling apart. Furniture your family will gather around for generations. Furniture worth keeping.

Handcrafted From The Heart

Dan Carlson set out to build the kind of furniture he couldn’t find, beautiful solid hardwood pieces, crafted with time-honored techniques and built to stand up to decades of real life. Mortise and tenon joinery that locks tight. Hand-selected wood chosen for its strength and natural character. Finishes applied by hand to protect the surface and let the beauty of the grain speak for itself. After years refining skills many modern furniture makers have moved away from, Dan brought that approach to North Carolina, shaping each piece with care, patience, and intention. Every table and butcherblock is guided by a simple standard: would it still feel right in our own home twenty years from now? Because your home deserves more than furniture made to be replaced, Lagniappe Woodworks is built around craftsmanship meant to last—solid, honest, and made to be lived with for generations.

How We Build

Every piece built by hand in our North Carolina workshop.

Lagniappe Woodworks grew from Burly Boards, the cutting board business that built our reputation for quality and craftsmanship. As demand grew beyond cutting boards to custom tables, countertops, and furniture, we needed a name that reflected this evolution. Lagniappe represents the next chapter in our journey: a refined, elevated expression of craftsmanship inspired by Dan's Louisiana roots.

The name says it all. Lagniappe means "a little something extra," and that's exactly what we deliver. Every table includes more attention to detail than expected. Every countertop gets more care in the finish. Every piece of furniture carries more character than necessary. It's the extra pass with sandpaper. The thoughtful grain selection. The hand-rubbed oil finish applied one more time than required. That is our philosophy.

We're still the same craftsman with the same standards. Burly Boards continues as our cutting board line, maintaining the reputation that started everything. But Lagniappe Woodworks allows us to bring that same dedication to heirloom quality furniture for your entire home.

What Drives Us

Our mission is straightforward: create furniture that becomes part of your family's heritage. We use the finest solid wood and traditional techniques to deliver not just a piece of furniture, but a little something extra in every detail. Quality that honors both tradition and modern living. Craftsmanship that elevates everyday moments into lasting memories.

We're guided by principles rooted in Louisiana's culture of artistry and hospitality:

  • Heritage Craftsmanship: Furniture should be built like art—thoughtful, traditional, timeless. We honor techniques passed down through generations of woodworkers.
  • Down-to-Earth Luxury: Luxury doesn't require pretension. Carefully selected hardwoods, custom finishes, and refined details create furniture that feels both personal and elevated.
  • A Little Something Extra: We give more care, more character, more craftsmanship than expected. This commitment defines every piece we build.
  • Heirloom Quality: We create furniture families can enjoy and pass down for generations. Built to last, designed to be loved.

Our vision is to become the premier luxury woodworking furniture maker, known for craftsmanship that honors tradition while elevating modern living. We want to bring thoughtful, enduring design into homes everywhere, one handcrafted piece at a time.

Meet Dan Carlson

Dan brings Louisiana woodworking heritage to every piece built in our North Carolina workshop. His approach blends Southern hospitality with master craftsmanship, creating furniture that feels warm, personal, and built to last. He believes furniture should carry a story, reflect the care of the person who made it, and improve the lives of the people who use it.

From Burly Boards cutting boards to custom dining tables, Dan's commitment remains the same: build it right, build it to last, and always include a little something extra.
