Why Choose Wood for Your Kitchen

There's something about working on natural wood that makes cooking feel different. The warmth under your hands. The character in the grain. The way it develops patina as you use it, telling the story of meals prepared and memories made. Wood countertops aren't just functional surfaces. They're the soul of your kitchen.
Every slab of hardwood carries unique grain patterns and color variation. No two countertops look identical because no two trees grow the same way. When you choose wood, you're bringing organic beauty into your home, a surface that's been growing for decades before it becomes part of your kitchen.
Wood ages gracefully. Small knife marks and wear patterns add character rather than diminishing value. The natural antibacterial properties of certain hardwoods make them ideal for food preparation. And when properly finished and maintained, wood countertops can last generations, developing richer color and deeper patina over time.
Why Wood Works:
- Natural Warmth: Wood feels different under your hands when you cook. Organic, alive, welcoming.
- Unique Character: No two countertops look identical. Every grain pattern tells the story of how that tree grew.
- Ages Beautifully: Develops richer color and patina over time instead of just wearing out.
- Naturally Antibacterial: Certain hardwoods have natural properties that resist bacteria growth on cutting surfaces.
- Can Be Refinished: Sand it smooth and reapply finish whenever needed. Wood countertops can last generations.
- Sustainable Choice: Renewable material from responsibly managed forests. Your countertops came from a living tree, not a factory.

Countertops Built With Southern Craftsmanship

Dan brings Louisiana woodworking traditions to every countertop we build. In the South, kitchens have always been the heart of the home, where families gather and stories unfold. Your countertops should reflect that importance. We select each board for grain pattern and color, join them precisely, and finish them to protect against daily use while letting the wood's natural beauty shine through.
Every countertop is custom-built in our North Carolina workshop. We account for your cabinet dimensions, appliance placement, and how you actually cook. Whether you need a full kitchen installation or a single island top, the approach stays the same: solid hardwood, careful joinery, and finishes that enhance rather than hide the wood's character.
What You Get:
- Solid Hardwood Construction: No veneers, no particle board cores. Just full-thickness wood chosen for durability and beauty.
- Precision Fitting: Custom measurements for your exact space, including all cutouts and edge treatments.
- Built for Daily Use: Finished to withstand chopping, heat exposure, moisture, and everything else that happens in a working kitchen.
- Hand-Applied Protection: Multiple finish coats carefully applied and cured to food-safe standards.

Materials and Finish Options
Every board is one of one. We’ll guide you through wood and finish options and confirm selections before your table enters production.
Ambrosia Maple
Ambrosia maple has a light maple base with distinctive gray-brown streaks and speckling, a smooth fine grain, and a one-of-a-kind character that makes a bold but natural statement.
Cherry
Warm reddish tones that deepen with age and light exposure. Medium hardness, fine grain, excellent for food prep areas. Classic choice for traditional kitchens.
Hard Maple
Light, creamy tone with a smooth, tight grain and durable hardness, creating a clean, bright look that fits both modern and classic kitchens.
Sapele
Deep, warm mahogany-like color with subtle shimmering grain and a smooth, durable finish for a bold, elegant statement.
Walnut
Rich chocolate brown with dramatic grain. Softer than oak or maple, making it more knife-friendly for cutting surfaces. Develops beautiful patina over time.
White Oak
Light blonde to medium brown with prominent grain. Very durable and naturally moisture-resistant due to closed cell structure. Ideal for high-use areas.
Finish Options
Food-Safe Oil Finish
Penetrating mineral oil or tung oil that enhances grain while leaving wood feeling natural. Requires periodic reapplication but develops beautiful patina. Best for surfaces you'll cut on directly.
Water-Based Polyurethane
Durable protective film that seals wood surface. More maintenance-free than oil, excellent moisture protection. Food-safe once fully cured. Best for perimeter counters and high-moisture areas.
Oil-Poly Blend
Combines natural appearance of oil with added protection of polyurethane. Good middle ground for surfaces that need durability but should look natural.
Construction Styles

Face Grain
Wide boards (4” - 8” wide) glued side-by-side, showing the face grain. Most common construction, beautiful grain patterns, cost-effective, excellent for countertops not used for cutting.

Edge Grain
Narrow strips (1 ½” wide) glued face-to-face, showing the edge grain. Next step up in long-term durability, but adds more labor and material. Looks great and adds that classic, traditional feel to any kitchen.

End Grain
Wood pieces oriented with end grain facing up. Most knife-friendly surface, self-healing properties, classic butcher block look. Labor-intensive construction, premium pricing. Only available on certain sized island tops**
Countertop Styles We Build
Each Lagniappe countertop is built to order and tailored to your space, style, and lifestyle. We focus on timeless forms rather than trends, ensuring every piece remains relevant and beautiful for decades.
Planning Your Wood Countertops
What you need to know before your consultation.
Standard Dimensions:
- Depth: Standard base cabinets are 24" deep. Countertops typically overhang 1" in front for 25" total depth. Islands often have 12-15" overhangs for bar seating.
- Thickness: 1.5" is standard and most cost-effective. 2" thickness provides more substantial appearance and easier edge details. 2.5"+ for extra visual weight.
- Length: We can build continuous runs up to 12 feet. Longer installations require seams, which we place strategically and join tightly.
What We Need From You:
- Exact cabinet dimensions (we can measure during consultation)
- Sink model and dimensions for cutout planning
- Cooktop or range dimensions if applicable
- Photos of your current kitchen layout
- Your vision for edge profile and finish
Timeline and Planning:
Custom countertops typically take 8-10 weeks from design approval to installation. This includes wood selection, construction time, finish application and curing, and scheduling installation. We'll provide an exact timeline during consultation based on project complexity and current schedule.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I cut directly on wood countertops?
You can on end-grain butcher block surfaces. For edge-grain countertops, we recommend using a cutting board to preserve the finish. If you want a surface you can cut on directly, we'll guide you toward end-grain construction and oil finishes.
How do I maintain wood countertops?
Wipe up spills promptly. Clean with mild soap and water, dry thoroughly. For oil finishes, reapply food-safe mineral oil every 4-6 weeks initially, then as needed when wood looks dry. For polyurethane finishes, just regular cleaning. Avoid standing water and use trivets under hot pots.
What about water damage around the sink?
Properly finished wood countertops handle normal kitchen moisture well. We pay special attention to sealing sink cutouts and edges. Water-based polyurethane finishes provide excellent moisture protection. The key is wiping up standing water and maintaining the finish according to our care instructions.
Do you install the countertops?
Yes. Professional installation is included in your project quote. We template your space, build to exact specifications, and install everything properly secured and sealed. Installation includes all necessary cutouts and final finish details.
Can wood countertops be refinished?
Absolutely. That's one of wood's biggest advantages. Over years of use, you can sand the surface smooth and reapply finish. Solid wood countertops can be refinished multiple times over their lifetime, making them truly permanent kitchen surfaces.
